The 4-H Youth Market Turkey Program begins in June when youth receive day-old turkey poults from NCSU’s poultry facility. For 5 months, each youth is responsible for raising 1 to 4 poults. In October, they enter their best turkey. On the 1st Friday of the NC State Fair each participant is placed in a class with 15 or less competitors. Youth show their bird & answers judges’ questions. The overall weight of the turkey, the muscling in the breast & legs, and how well each youth has taken care of their bird are all evaluated. Ribbons & placement money are awarded. 1st place winners in each class compete in an overall class for grand champion.
