At 9 am, the gobble of turkeys filled the air on Friday, October 17th but it wasn’t because it was Thanksgiving time. It was because over 200 youth participants had joined together in Raleigh at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds to show off their home-raised turkeys for the 2008 State Youth Market Turkey Show. Since June 4th, youth from all across the state have been raising their day-old poults to become giant poultry winners in competition for the fair. With over 60 turkeys topping the scales at 40 plus pounds, the grand champion brought in $6,000 and the reserve champion sold for $4,000. Brunswick County 4-H youth showed off their best turkeys and gave the contestants a run for their money. In the Senior division (ages 14-18), Elizabeth Mintz placed 4th, and Sydney Nobles placed 5th. In the Junior division (ages 9-13), Harrison Nobles placed 8th. In the Gobbler division (ages 9 and under), Elaina Nobles placed 5th, Kaylan Strickland placed 6th, and Kamy Strickland placed 7th.
