It’s that time again!  Time for the Youth Market Turkey Show at the North Carolina State Fair

This morning at 10:00 am our 4-H Agent, Blair, headed out with 7 turkeys and 2 rabbits in tow to the North Carolina State Fair.  The turkeys were to arrive at the fairgrounds today by 7:00 pm and will be shown on Friday October 17th starting at 9:00 am.

Preparation for this event began earlier this summer in June when 4-H’ers received the three to four day old turkeys from NCSU’s poultry facility.  The youth were responsible for feeding and caring for their birds until the NC State Fair, where all of their hard work will be put to the test. From just a couple of ounces of peeping fuzz that fit in your palm, to an average of thirty pounds that now required both hands to hold, youth learned how to raise turkeys and literally “grew” with their projects.

Last year more than 227 youth participated in the Youth Markey Turkey Show.  They were evaluated on the overall weight of their turkeys, the muscling in the breast and legs, and how well each participant had taken care of their bird.
