Wildlife in North Carolina magazine is proud to announce the 7th annual installment of our highly popular & wildly successful photo competition. The Wildlife in North Carolina Photo Competition aims to encourage people to participate in nature photography, thereby fostering greater understanding and appreciation of NC’s wildlife & wild places. Winning photographs will be published in the January-February 2012 issue of Wildlife in North Carolina. Visit www.ncwildlife.org for more information about the competition.

Photos will be judged in 10 categories:

Birds
Mammals
Reptiles & Amphibians
Invertebrates
Wild Landscapes:The peaks, valleys, plains and beaches of North Carolina.
Wild Plants:Wild-growing plants and fungi only, including their ﬂowers, leaves, fruits and other parts. Absolutely no cultivated plants will be accepted.
Outdoor Recreation:Show how people interact with North Carolina’s natural world through activities that are inextricably linked to nature, such as hunting, ﬁshing, hiking, rock climbing or canoeing.
Animal Behavior:Anything animals do, from everyday activities to interactions with other animals to unusual behavior.
Youth Photographer, 13–17:Any of the above subjects, shot by photographers under 18.
Youth Photographer, 12 & under: Any of the above subjects, shot by children 12 and younger.

Horse Photography Workshop & Contest

The Silver Spurs Club is sponsoring a Horse Photography class, Thursday, March 3, 2011. The class size is limited,so please call the office to sign up as soon as possible. Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program- Top Winners Receive $10,000

Every year, Kohl’s recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) across the country for their amazing contributions to their communities. This year we are recognizing more than 2,100 kids with more than $415,000 in scholarships and prizes. Nominations are accepted from now until March 15th!

Raise turkeys for the NC State Fair!

The 4-H Youth Market Turkey Program begins in June when youth receive day-old turkey poults from NCSU’s poultry facility. For 5 months, each youth is responsible for raising 1 to 4 poults. In October, they enter their best turkey. On the 1st Friday of the NC State Fair each participant is placed in a class with 15 or less competitors. Youth show their bird & answers judges’ questions. The overall weight of the turkey, the muscling in the breast & legs, and how well each youth has taken care of their bird are all evaluated. Ribbons & placement money are awarded. 1st place winners in each class compete in an overall class for grand champion. You may know it as the place to get soil boxes, speak to a Master Gardener or enroll your children in 4-H, but Cooperative Extension is so much more. A partnership between N.C. State University, N.C. A&T State University and Brunswick County, Cooperative Extension is your local link to resources and information in agriculture, horticulture, foods and nutrition, parenting and an array of youth programs through 4-H. Programs are based on needs identified by advisory groups and input from local citizens.

Help us ensure that Cooperative Extension’s programs continue to adapt as Brunswick County changes by filling out the survey available at http://surveymonkey.com/s/Brunswick_Cooperative_Extension . I am pleased to announce the opening of “4-H and NCSU: Leading Together” a DH Hill Library Exhibit. The exhibit celebrates the 100 year partnership of 4-H, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina State University. It is designed as the capstone for our three year celebration of We Are 4-H: The North Carolina 4-H Centennial.

Please plan to visit the exhibit anytime during the next six months. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Spend a Day at Planet Fun and Support Brunswick County Relay for Life

The Team CIA (Cheers Insurance Agency-Nationwide) is sponsoring a Relay for Life fundraiser on February 5^th at Planet Fun from 12:00 to 8:00pm. They are selling all day tickets that are good for most games, including bowling, mini golf, and laser tag and all arcade games that do NOT award a prize. Cards are only $15.00! Only good for the 5^th and proceeds benefit their Relay for Life team.

The cards MUST BE PURCHASED BEFORE THE 5^th at either of the Nationwide offices (Main Street in Shallotte or Seaside Road in Ocean Isle Beach)

They are also having a raffle that includes: 4 rounds of golf (Brierwood, Brunswick Plantation, Carolina Shores, Farmstead, or Sandpiper Bay), jewelry, and a full size gas and charcoal grill. Wear Pink on the Day of the event!

Horse Volunteers Training Opportunity

NC/VA Horse Leader Training Conference The NC/VA Leader Training will be held January 29-30, 2011 NC/VA at the Guilford Co. Extension Office, Greensboro, NC. Conference topics will provide an overview of youth horse program activities, including organizing the horse club, recruiting parent support, fund raising and specific information on training youth for educational contests, horse shows, and much more. It will be hosted by NC 4-H Horse Program.

Hickman’s Crossroads Making New Paths

On Friday, the third of December, the club went on its first hike in Columbus County on Darby Dawkin’s farmland. We hiked for one hour and then we sat around a bonfire while roasting marshmallows and hotdogs. Also, Darby Dawkins, our historian, taught our first astronomy class. This event was dedicated to the Hooven family who recently moved to Stanley County, NC. The Hoovens have been a very active family in our 4-H club.
