New Horse Club Starts Tuesday! November 29, 2010

Are horses your thing? If so, a horse club could be right up your alley!

Looking for something fun and exciting to do with your friends? Do you own a horse or enjoy being around them? Well our brand new horse club is just the thing for you!

This club will hold their first meeting on Tuesday November 30 at 6:30pm at the Extension Office Training Center in Bolivia at the Government Complex.  The club is open to any youth age 5-19.

You will have the opportunity to do fun hands-on activities centered around equine, take trips to local horse farms, and spend time with friends and caring adult mentors!

4-H Livestock Events November 24, 2010

Here are some brief updates on some of the upcoming events involving the 4-H Youth Livestock Program:

January 22- NC Junior Hereford Association will be hosting their annual Judging in January event at the NCSU Beef Educational Unit.  This livestock judging contest/clinic is open to youth of all ages and is a great introductory event for kids interested in participating in livestock judging events.  The specifics and online entry form will be posted early next week.

March 5-6- Eastern Carolina Showmanship Clinic will be held in Tarboro at the Eastern Carolina Ag and Education Center.  This event offers youth interested in showing livestock an opportunity to come and spend the weekend learning about nutrition, daily care, selection, and showmanship for sheep, swine, meat goats, or beef cattle.  We will have guest speakers who are experts in their field come to teach this event.  The entry form for this event will be posted on the 4-H Youth Livestock webpage.

 March 19- The National Junior Swine Association will be hosting a boot camp for youth ages 8-12, that are interested in the swine industry.  This event will be held at Virginia Tech and is open to all youth on the East Coast. Top Participating County for 4-H National Youth Science Day November 23, 2010

Brunswick County had the highest participation levels in youth reporting back their results for National Youth Science Day at http://www.4 H.org/NYSD and, as a result, will be receiving a $500 award to use towards our county’s science, engineering and technology programming! Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s experiement!!

Thanksgiving Dinner for Military Families November 12, 2010

Lowe’s, the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the USO of North Carolina invite our Military and their families for Thanksgiving Dinner at the Charlotte Motor Speedway! Enter This Year’s Honey Bee Contest! November 3, 2010

Announcing this year’s  Honey Bee Essay contest!  This year the rules have changed to ONLY electronic submissions.  That means you can’t say, “The essay is in the mail”.

 

First place national winner is $750.   That’s Right! $750!  You could add the additional $50 that the NC Beekeepers award to the chosen essay from North Carolina.  The only hitch is that you have to write on the topic and follow the rules.

Here’s the topic:

“U.S. Honey: A Taste for Every Preference”

The taste and color of honey varies according to flowers where the bees gather the nectar. Each different type of plant will yield honey with a different taste. The same plants, growing in different soils and climates, can yield different honey. The 4-H’ers are encouraged to invesigate the local/regional honeys of the United States and see how they differ in taste and color. Is a honey dark with a rich flavor, or light in color and mild-tasting? One honey may be the choice for topping your pancakes; another may be best for baking cookies or cakes. Actual access to the honey for tasting is not required – just find out about some of the characteristics and write about them.
